Budget guide

Free and cheap things to do in Rockport with kids

A family day in Rockport does not have to cost much. Several of the town's best stops are free or donation-based.

Completely free

Aquarium at Rockport Harbor

This volunteer-run aquarium has no admission fee. Kids can see local fish, crabs and other bay creatures up close. A donation helps keep it running.

Connie Hagar Cottage Sanctuary

A free in-town bird sanctuary with short, flat trails. Visit in the morning during spring or fall migration for the most birds.

Rockport Center for the Arts

Gallery entry is free, and the outdoor sculpture garden is a nice place to let kids walk around. See the listing.

Downtown, the harbor and the makers market

Watching shrimp boats, pelicans and the occasional dolphin from Rockport Harbor costs nothing. On market days, Austin Street adds music and local vendors.

Harriet's Garden at Fulton Mansion

The self-guided garden walk at the Fulton Mansion is free even if you skip the house tour.

Pay what you can

The Texas Maritime Museum uses donation-based admission, so families can visit for whatever fits their budget. Plan an hour or two.

Low cost

  • Rockport Beach Park: one vehicle pass covers everyone in the car, which makes it cheap for larger families.
  • Goose Island State Park: children 12 and under enter free, adults pay a small daily fee, and the Big Tree is a short drive from the main park.
  • Pier fishing: kids under 17 need no Texas fishing license, and a bag of bait shrimp costs only a few dollars.

Money-saving tips

  • Pack a picnic. Rockport Beach and Goose Island both have picnic tables and shade shelters.
  • If you will visit the beach several times in a year, an annual pass pays for itself quickly.
  • Many festival events, like public bird banding during the HummerBird Celebration, are free to attend.
  • Texas State Parks Day in November has offered free day-use entry in past years.

Hours, fees and event dates in this guide were checked in October 2026. Coastal venues can change schedules for weather, holidays and repairs, so confirm directly before you drive out.
